outback australia broken hill nsw Broken Hill also provides the perfect base for exploring the area – be it outback attractions just out of town or further out into the great Australian outback. Close to town are attraction like the Sculpture Symposium, Silverton and Mundi Muni Plains. Slightly further away there are two amazing National Parks (Mutawintji and Kinchega), the mighty Darling River (and the iconic Australian driving tour “The Darling River Run”) and the Opal town of White Cliffs.

Even further afield; to the north is the area known as the Corner Country (Tibooburra, Milparinka, and Cameron Corner) with the vast Sturt National Park, while to the south is Lake Mungo (Mungo National Park) and further south (along the Darling River) is Wentworth where the mighty Darling meets the Murray River,

National Parks

Kinchega National Park:

Kinchega National ParkWith the magnificent Darling River forming its eastern border, Kinchega National Park was formerly part of the Kinchega-Kars pastoral lease which covered 800,000 hectares and extended all the way from Menindee to Broken Hill. The area of Kinchega incorporates half the lakes which makes up Menindee Lakes; man-made lakes (originally pondages of the Darling River) feed by the seasonal flow of the Darling River. Mungo National Park:

mungo national park outback nsw australiaIn theory it is nothing more than the remnants of an ancient lake (completely dry and with ancient sand dunes running 20+ km along one side) in the middle of the New South Wales outback. In reality it is one of the most significant anthropological and archaeological sites in the world. Lake Mungo, located in Mungo National Park, is one of 17 dry lakes which constitute the Willandra Lakes World Heritage Area (1981). Lake Mungo Image Gallery

Towns

Menindee

menindee outback nsw australia"There was Harrison, who made his pile when Pardon won the cup...." so penned Banjo Paterson in the immortal poem 'The Man from Snowy River'. The 'Cup' actually refers to the Presidents Cup at Menindee and not the Melbourne Cup as many people have assumed. Menindee is a town steeped in Legend and History for Indigenous and European culture.

Pooncarie

pooncarie outback nsw australiaThe famous explorers Bourke and Wills reached the Darling river at nearby Tarcoola Station and made camp at what is now Bilbarka Park in September 1860 one way to their ill-fated expedition to the North West

Silverton

silverton outback nsw australiaThe tourists come to experience a real ghost town and consequently there are a number of shops, art galleries, museums and pubs which have grown up to meet their needs. Its location (drive a few kilometres out of town to 'The Breakers' and marvel at the desert which stretches to the horizon) and its proximity to all the creature comforts of Broken Hill have ensured that it is popular with any film crew needing to shoot some desert and Outback scenes. In fact the Silverton Hotel at the Burke St corner has been used in films as diverse as Wake in Fright, Mad Max 2, A Town Like Alice, Hostage, Razorback , Journey into Darkness and Golden Soak. When you visit make sure you have a drink in the historic pub, visit the Silverton Pioneer Museum, stop off at the Gaol and Court House and inspect some of the local galleries. Here is a true Outback experience and you can return to the comfort of Broken Hill feeling no pain or hardship at all. Images of Silverton

Wentworth

wentworth nsw outback australia'Magnificent trees droop like willows to the waters edge with evening's mildest radiance in their foliage, throwing a soft haze over the distance...' Charles Sturt 1844. Wentworth is located at the junction of Australia's two great rivers - The Murray and The Darling. Originally named Hawdon's Ford, it was surveyed in 1858 and named Wentworth in 1859 after the Australian explorer, journalist and politician William Charles Wentworth. Before the Darling River was opened up, Wentworth was the hub to which much of the wool clip was brought for shipment to either Echuca (for transport to Melbourne) or Morgan (for transport to Adelaide).

White Cliffs

white cliffs nsw outback australiaEver wanted a great nights sleep without ANY ambient noise or light and not sure how to do it? Well, the answer is at White Cliffs. With the exception to a few essential travellers’ services, most of White Cliffs is underground and it is a truly remarkable experience – even for those who may baulk at the underground experience.White Cliffs is Australia’s oldest Opal field (seam Opal) and developed from a chance finding in the 1880’s by a group of ‘Roo’ shooters of Opal. Its population peaked in the late 1890’s at around 5,000 and started to decline after WW1 and now boasts a population of around 200. A very easy 98km drive from Wilcannia on sealed road.

Wilcannia:

wilcannia nsw outback australiaIf there is one great, and largely undisturbed, port on the mighty Darling River it is Wilcannia. Cross the bridge driving from Sydney to Broken Hill and turn either to your right or left when you enter the town and you will be amazed at the richness of the architecture. Here are the remnants of a once-important inland port. Some of the town's historic treasures include the old centre-lift bridge which was built in 1896 and is now classified by the National Trust, the beautiful 1880 post office and its attached residence, the Athenaeum Library (1883) and the impressive courthouse (1880), police station (1881), and the police residence (1880), which were all built of locally quarried sandstone and designed by James Barnet. In the right seasons the area near the bridge is ideal for picnics.
