charlotte pass australian alps: Few things in Australia are more iconic, or more quickly stir the Australian identity than "The Man from Snowy River", Banjo Paterson's immortal poem.... "There was movement at the station, for the word had passed around... " The words of this beautiful poem, which forms part of our psyche, beautifully describes a time, a way of life, and a region around Australia's highest mountain, Mt Kosciusko"And down by Kosciusko, where the pine-clad ridges raise, Their torn and rugged battlements on high, Where the air is clear as crystal, and the white stars fairly blaze, At midnight in the cold and frosty sky".

Mount Kosciuszko |
The Australian Alpine Region contains some of the most majestic vistas and uniquely spectacular scenery. While Australian is regarded as a relatively flat land (by comparison to Europe or America), the beauty of the Alps is made even more so by this very fact. The mighty Snowy River flows from Australia's highest Mountain (Mount Kosciuszko - 2,228m) down the eastern side of The Great Dividing Range to Lake Jindabyne before turning south. There are few greater sights in Australia than that of Mount Kosciusko, from Charlotte Pass, and the Snowy River. The are two great Australian icons.
