south gotland sweden sverigeThe southern area of Gotland, ‘Sudret’, south of Hemse and ‘Storsudret’ south of Havdhem, hosts a diverse landscape that seems to be green and more lush than the more northern parts.. Gotland is an amazing Swedish island situated in the Baltic Sea between Sweden and Finland with a population of around 60,000. The county Gotlands län is made up of the main island and several smaller ones including Fårön, Gotska Sandön, and Karlsö.  On highlight (of many) is the walled capital of Visby...  truly picture postcard stuff.

The amazing Uggarderojr (Uggårda Rojr) is Gotlands largest Bronze Age stone Cairn stands 7 metres tall and 45 metres wide. Originally located on the coastline, it is now 1.5 km inland due to the receding water levels since the Bronze Age. Rojr is a Gotland word that means Mounds and they are located on Uggårda which is a property near Ronehamn Gotland Sweden Sverige.

Bottarvegården is a lovely living museum that provides an insight to a work 1800s Gotland Farm. The main barn provides a wonderful example of Agtak roofing which is a type of thatched roof which is uniqur to Gotlandic and is constructed from tightly packed ‘Ag’, a reed-like plant which is placed in a thick layer starting at the eaves so that the rain and melt water runs off from the roof without penetrating. Bottarve is ocated just south of Burgsvik Gotland Sweden Sverige.

There are many clichés about Sweden (meatballs, herring, Vikings and Volvos and ABBA) and when one visits Sverige some clichés are so welcoming; the smell of pine forests, picking berries and even Knäckebröd (crisp bread) will others Surströmming (fermented fish) are not so initially enticing to the non-swedish.

The very beautiful Nordic country of Sweden lies to the north of continental Europe on the Scandinavian Peninsular (with Norway and Finland being the other two countries occupying the peninsular. Sweden, a constitutional monarchy, is the 3rd largest country of the EU and with only 9+ million people means it has one of the lowest population densities with about 85% of its population living in urban areas.
