kiama southcoast photography: Kiama, a beautifully set seaside town located on the southcoast of NSW, is located about 130kms south of Sydney and sits beautifully between the escarpment of the Southern Highlands and the Pacific Ocean. The southcoast at Kiama is probably some of the most beautiful in all the country; and it comes as no surprise that it is one of the state's top holiday destinations.
The prominant feature of the southcoast is the magnificent escarpment of the Great Dividing Range with the rich and fertile dairy country siting below the Southern Highlands. These wonderful elements offer the visitor the best of coastal villages like Gerringong and Gerroa and wonderful towns like Jamberoo and Berry. Venture up the escarpment and the country idyll of Kangaroo Valley presents itself and it is a beautiful as the name suggests.

The NSW southcoast is an area of spectacular granite cliffs, wonderful surf beaches, beautiful hinterland below the escarpment, and wonderful national parks. The short drive south from Sydney (less than two hours) reveals glimpses of the Pacific Ocean just prior to reaching Wollongong as you descend the Illawarra escarpment at Bulli Pass and the start of the NSW South Coast which extends to Eden near the NSW-Victorian border (400kms to the south).
The name Kiama, is believed to have originated form a transliteration of the Wodi Wodi indigenous name, Kiarama-a, meaning " ...where the sea makes a noise..." The (European) birth of the area can be attributed to the dairy industry (nearby Jamberoo is attributed to being the birthplace of the Australian Dairy Industry) and Kiama came into its own due to the blue metal (Basalt) quarries used to supply the growing colony with road-base and signs of this early activity is still visible around town and also at Bombo Headland.
Some of the local attractions include: The Kiama Lighthouse and Blowhole, Gerringong, Bombo Beach, Minnamurra River, Saddleback Mountain, Jamberoo, Seven Mile Beach, Cathedral Rock; and a short drive to Kangaroo Valley.
The large Moreton National Park has some wonderful waterfalls including Fitzroy Falls and Belmore Falls; with many wonderful bushwalking trails.
