The South Island is an area full of pristine areas of great ecological importance it is a place where one can be truly alone in the environment. The majestic Southern Alps stretch along the west coast with the pinnacle being Mt Cook (Aoriki) and nearby glaciers of Fox and Franz Josef.. they will take your breath away by their scale.
In the south-west corner of the island is the Fjordland including Doubtful Sound and Milford Sound. Travelling down them makes one feel tiny as the black, deep water provides an eyrie contrast to the towering sides that reach to the skies. Central Otago is also a magical place and is reminiscent of the Scottish Highlands with its elevated plains surrounded by the South Alps and Dunstan Range.
