ostersundOstersund Sweden (Östersund): The beautiful Jämtland city of Östersund is situated on the spectacular Lake Storsjön and is about half way between Sundsvall on the Swedish east coast and the border with Norway. Ostersun is know as the Vinterstaden (Winter City) and is home to many of Sweden’s top winter Olympians as it boast amazing facilities and suitable winter sport climate and is located about 1 hour from Åre, a great winter destination.

Östersund grew to its present size of 58,000 from continuous beginnings as it was intend as a centre to create a monopoly over Jämtland whose inhabitants' lucrative trade annoyed the Swedish Crown by means of forcing local producers to deliver merchandise to middlemen in Ostersund. It the towns detriment, the population opposed this and for many years its growth was stymied. Ostersund became a city in its own right early in the 19th century after opening of commerce due to rail expansion and other associated economic reforms.

Today, its population of around 60,000 is involved in tourism, commerce, winter sports and adventure tours amongst other things. Östersund’s most famous inhabitant is Storsjöodjuret (the Great Lake Monster).

Medelpad is a historical province in the north of Sweden and borders to Hälsingland, Härjedalen, Jämtland, Ångermanland and the Gulf of Bothnia. The province is a part of Norrland and as such considered to be Northern Sweden, although the province geographically is located in the middle of Sweden. It is a common misconception that name "Medelpad" ("middle land" or "middle ground") reflects this, but the name actually refers to the fact that most of the province lies between its two rivers Ljungan and Indalsälven.

The very beautiful Nordic country of Sweden lies to the north of continental Europe on the Scandinavian Peninsular (with Norway and Finland being the other two countries occupying the peninsular. Sweden, a constitutional monarchy, is the 3rd largest country of the EU and with only 9+ million people means it has one of the lowest population densities with about 85% of its population living in urban areas.

There are many clichés about Sweden (meatballs, herring, Vikings and Volvos and ABBA) and when one visits Sverige some clichés are so welcoming; the smell of pine forests, picking berries and even Knäckebröd (crisp bread) will others Surströmming (fermented fish) are not so initially enticing to the non-Swedish.
