Sundsvall hosts one of the prettiest town centres there is; though not by original design as the town. Sundsvall, which was first chartered in the early 1600's, has experience several devastating fires but like a phoenix, Sundsvall rose out of the ashes and the beautiful architecture of the town is the result of rebuilding after the 1888 fire.Sundsvall is the capital of Norrland and is beautifully set on the Selångerån River between two hills, Norra Berget (North Mountain) and Södra Berget. Sundsvall grew as a centre for the Swedish forestry industry and town is reputed to be where Swedish industrialisation started with the introduction of steam powered saw mills.
The fire and the resulting rebuild also provided Sundsvall with its mascot, the Dragon. The oriental Dragon was chosen by those in charge rebuilding the city for its protective powers and many buildings are adorned with this figure of courage and power; as well as many others throughout the streets. In fact, in July, the residents honour the mythical creature with an annual street festival, (Gatufesten).

Medelpad is a historical province in the north of Sweden and borders to Hälsingland, Härjedalen, Jämtland, Ångermanland and the Gulf of Bothnia. The province is a part of Norrland and as such considered to be Northern Sweden, although the province geographically is located in the middle of Sweden. It is a common misconception that name "Medelpad" ("middle land" or "middle ground") reflects this, but the name actually refers to the fact that most of the province lies between its two rivers Ljungan and Indalsälven.

Sundsvall provides the perfect base for exploring the High Coast (Höga Kusten) north of Sundsvall and also if wanting to tour westward to Östersund and further into Jämtland and the mountains like Äre near the Norwegian border.
There are many clichés about Sweden (meatballs, herring, Vikings and Volvos and ABBA) and when one visits Sverige some clichés are so welcoming; the smell of pine forests, picking berries and even Knäckebröd (crisp bread) will others Surströmming (fermented fish) are not so initially enticing to the non-swedish.
The very beautiful Nordic country of Sweden lies to the north of continental Europe on the Scandinavian Peninsular (with Norway and Finland being the other two countries occupying the peninsular. Sweden, a constitutional monarchy, is the 3rd largest country of the EU and with only 9+ million people means it has one of the lowest population densities with about 85% of its population living in urban areas.
